The European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM) is a multidisciplinary organization that aims to:
- increase understanding of the marine environment, to study and observe the interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere and the coast (6 laboratories from the fields of sciences of life, of the universe, or of the society);
- train researchers and scientists in this field (masters degree and doctoral programme);
- contribute to the investigations of natural or human-induced modifications in the marine environment (observatories of coastal and offshore environments).
LabexMER "A changing ocean" is a cluster of Excellence ("Labex") funded by the French "Investment for the future" programme, supported by French Ministry of Research and Education. It combines the best research teams and laboratories in the field of marine sciences in Western France to tackle fundamental issues related to understanding of ocean functioning in the context of climate change. With a scientific coordination by IUEM, the cluster federates about 700 researchers from 11 research units of Western French universities and institutions: Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), Université de Bretagne-Sud (UBS), Université de Nantes, Ifremer, CNRS, IRD and Ecole Centrale Nantes.
